As a gym owner or manager, you know that creating a positive atmosphere in your studio is crucial for attracting and retaining members. One often overlooked aspect of the gym atmosphere is the quality of the sound system.
To find out more about why gym sound quality is so important and how to go about maximising it in your studio, read on!
Why Sound Quality Matters
Good sound quality can enhance the overall workout experience of your members. Clear music motivates members and makes working out far more enjoyable, whilst clear instructions in group fitness classes ensures that members can hear the Fitness Instructor and follow the class with ease.
Choosing the Right Sound System for Your Gym
With so many options on the market, it can be overwhelming to choose the right sound system for your gym. Here are a few things to consider when making your decision:
- Size and layout of the gym: The size and layout of your gym will determine the type and number of speakers you need. Consider the dimensions of your space, as well as any obstacles that may affect sound quality.
- Budget: Determine your budget and look for sound systems that meet your needs and fall within your price range.
- Features: Look for features that are important to you and your members. For example, some gym owners may prioritise a system with Bluetooth connectivity, while others may prioritise durability and waterproofing.
- Warranty and customer support: Make sure to choose a sound system from a reputable company that offers a good warranty and customer support, such as Fitness Audio. This will give you peace of mind and ensure that any issues with your system can be quickly addressed.
Maintaining Your Sound System
Proper maintenance is key to ensuring that your sound system continues to perform at its best. Here are a few tips for maintaining your gym's sound system:
- Keep it clean: Dust and debris can accumulate on speakers and other components, leading to reduced sound quality. Regularly dust and clean your system to ensure optimal performance.
- Protect it from moisture: If your gym is in a humid environment, be sure to take steps to protect your sound system from moisture. Waterproof speakers and protective covers can help prevent damage from sweat and water.
- Regularly check and replace components: As with any equipment, regular wear and tear can lead to the need for repair or replacement. Make sure to regularly check and replace any worn or damaged components to ensure your system is working at its best.
Invest in Good Sound Quality for Your Gym
As you can see, good sound quality is critical for creating a vibrant atmosphere and enjoyable workout experience in your gym.

Wireless Mics - A General Definition:
A wireless microphone is a microphone without a physical cable connecting it directly to the amplifying equipment.
A wireless microphone system allows the user’s voice to be transmitted “wirelessly” to its receiver, located in the sound system. The sound system amplifies the signal from the receiver and outputs it through the system’s speakers.
A wireless mic system consists of three main components that operate together as a low powered, individual radio station.
1. The Microphone:
The microphone is the piece of equipment that Fitness Instructors speak into. Although the first wireless mic systems were designed with handheld mics, nearly all Fitness Instructors prefer the hands-free freedom a headset mic allows. The mic connects to the transmitter.
2. The Transmitter:
Wireless mic systems used for fitness originally all utilised bodypack transmitters. The headset mic connects to a bodypack transmitter via a short cable. In the early 2000s, Samson Technologies designed the first “transmitter on the headset” wireless mic, the Airline 77. Both types of transmitters – bodypack and transmitter-on-headset are widely used for group exercise instruction today and are available from many manufacturers. Fitness Audio supplies both types of microphone transmitter.
The transmitter converts the audio from the microphone to radio waves and transmits them to the receiver.
3. The Receiver:
The receiver receives the radio transmission from the transmitter and converts it back to an audio signal so it can be amplified by the sound system. The receiver is typically located in the sound system or near enough to it to be connected by a short audio cable.
FAQs:
Q: Is a wireless mic system all I need for my class to hear me?
A: Wireless mic systems make no sound on their own. They must be connected to a sound system. Note: some ‘all-in-one’ portable sound systems have a wireless receiver built-in, so this connection is already made. You need a compatible headset and transmitter and you are good to go do your class.
Q: Is a headset mic all I need for my class to hear me?
A: Headset mics make no sound on their own. They are the first component in a wireless mic system. You need a complete wireless mic system connected to a sound system for your class to hear you.
Q: Will a Shure (for example) transmitter work with an Audio-Technica (for example) receiver?
A:
- Different brands of wireless audio equipment are not compatible with each other due to the specific radio frequencies and methods of transmission each manufacturer uses.
- Generally speaking, a transmitter only works with the specific receiver it was designed to work with. Even if both pieces are from the same manufacturer, they need to be the same model and operate on the same frequency or frequency range.
- Fitness Audio is always available to help you figure out whether wireless components are compatible or to let you know the components you need to make them work.
Q: Will an Audio-Technica (for example) headset mic work with a Shure (for example) body-pack transmitter?
A. Headset mics don’t transmit anything and aren’t frequency dependent. The bodypack transmitter and receiver are the “radio” components in the wireless system. The headset is simply the mic. In theory, any headset mic should work with any bodypack transmitter. However, each wireless manufacturer uses a different type of connector for their headsets and bodypacks. This makes them generally not interchangeable. For example, Shure uses a 4-pin connector configured in a 'Y' shape. Audio-Technica uses a 4-pin connector configured in a square shape. You can’t physically plug a Shure headset into an Audio-Technica bodypack.
A standard manufacturer’s headset can be re-terminated with a connector to match the transmitter you wish to plug into, but this is generally not cost-effective, and is sometimes technically-impossible. It’s usually best to simply get a headset that has the connector that matches your transmitter, or vice versa.
Fitness-Rated Headset Microphones
Fitness Audio are the experts in fitness-rated sound equipment, including wireless microphones. Our mics are designed specifically for Fitness Instructors. Most standard headset mics that come with a wireless mic system simply are not.
EMics and Aeromics are offered with different connectors for all major transmitter bodypacks. If you switch wireless systems to a different manufacturer and connector type down the road, we can change the connector on your EMic or Aeromic so it will work with your new system.

Aqua Aerobics (or Water Aerobics) is becoming the fitness class of choice for many people. Because of this, more classes are opening up and more Fitness Instructors are learning to teach Aqua Aerobics.
This means more competition and more chance of losing your clients. Don’t stress though, because there are many things you can do to level-up your aqua aerobics class. Read on for Fitness Audio's top 3.
Add Variety to Your Classes
Water aerobics can get boring if it’s repetitive and similar every time. Mundane classes drive clients away, so you want to ensure you avoid teaching monotonous and repetitive Aqua Aerobics classes.
To do this, mix up your routine. Experiment with different exercises, transitions, and music. This will keep your Water Aerobics class exciting and keep your students coming back for more!
Connect With Your Participants
Like with all group fitness classes, forming connections with all your clients is key in Aqua Aerobics. Remember your students’ names and make an effort to get to know them. Aim to arrive at your classes early and leave later so you can chat to your clients before and after your class and give them an opportunity to get to know each other.
When students feel like they are valued and a part of a community, they are less likely to quit or move to other Aqua Aerobics classes.
Motivate Your Class
Lastly, you need to motivate your class. Move around, encourage your class, and make it fun! Use inflection and excitement in your voice and pump motivating music. Just don’t forget to invest in a solid sound system and fitness microphone.
For more information on quality sound equipment that will help boost your clients’ motivation levels through the roof, get in touch with Fitness Audio today! We are happy to answer any questions you may have and advise you on what audio products you do and do not need for your Aqua Aerobics class.

Wireless mic systems have taken the fitness world by storm. They’ve transformed the game when it comes to instructing group fitness classes, allowing for a much more positive class experience for both the students and the Fitness Instructor.
What exactly are wireless microphone systems, though? And how do they work? Read on for Fitness Audio’s complete guide to wireless fitness mics.
What Are Wireless Microphones?
As the name suggests, wireless microphones (or cordless microphones) are microphones that do not require a physical cable connecting it to the sound recording or amplifying equipment it is being used with.
Their simple, wire-free design makes them a popular choice for many industries, particularly the fitness industry. As Group Fitness Instructors need to move around and demonstrate various physical exercises, having a wire-free mic allows for greater freedom to move around and prevents tripping over or getting caught in cables. Bonus points if it’s a sweat-protected fitness microphone!
How Do Wireless Microphones Work?
A wireless mic system consists of three main components: the microphone, the transmitter, and the receiver.
The microphone’s job is to capture the Group Exercise Instructor’s voice and convert the sound waves into an electrical signal that is sent to the mic transmitter. From here, the transmitter transmits the audio signal through a specific radio frequency to the receiver. The receiver receives this radio frequency and converts it back into an audio signal that can be played out through the speakers.
Although this may seem simple enough, there are more details and complexities to wireless mic systems, so we do recommend you talk to the Fitness Audio team before you get one. We’ll be able to advise you on what type of wireless microphone system is best for your gym and make sure that all your equipment is compatible before you make your purchase.

One of the many benefits of investing in a high-quality set of speakers is that they can last a lifetime. That is, if you take good care of them. Like most pieces of audio equipment, speakers sound their best when they are looked after. Take good care of your speakers, and they will take care of you. Read on to find out how.
1. Keep Your Speakers Dust-Free
Dusty speakers don’t look good, nor do they sound good. Dust can infiltrate your speakers’ wire connectors (the place where the wire and metal meet) and disrupt the electric signals that run between the source and the speakers. This can add excess noise to your gym’s sound system and, in extreme cases, can damage your speakers’ wiring.
To combat this, make sure you clean your speakers regularly. Dust pads, dry cloths, air canisters and vacuum cleaners are all safe to use on your speakers. Never use liquids or alcohols to clean your speakers.
2. Protect Your Speakers From the Heat
Never position your speakers in direct sunlight and try to keep them away from windows. This usually isn’t a concern for fitness studios, however can be an issue for speakers positioned around gyms that have a lot of natural light.
Excess exposure to sun and heat can cause the speakers to overheat and hinder the electrical flow between the speakers and audio source.
3. Be Mindful of Static Electricity
Exposure to static electricity can also be greatly detrimental to your speakers. To protect your speakers from static electricity, avoid positioning them directly on the floor, especially if it is carpeted.
4. Ensure Your Gym is Well-Ventilated
Ensuring there is adequate airflow around your gym’s speakers is also important in helping them cool down whilst they’re playing. One of the best ways to do this is to keep your speakers out of tight spaces and mount them onto your studio’s walls. This will not only prolong the life of your speakers, but will also improve their sound quality as there will be less distortion due to vibrations and overheating.
Following these tips will help keep your fitness centre’s speakers in mint condition and prolong their operative life. Keep in mind, however, that if your speakers are very old or poor-quality, these tips will not be as effective.
For any questions around gym sound systems, get in touch with the Fitness Audio team today. We can advise you on what audio equipment is best for your fitness studio, and provide you with top-of-the-range, fitness-rated products.

Being a Fitness Instructor isn’t always easy. Having to run multiple classes a day, motivating countless students, and making sure all your equipment is operating well consistently can get exhausting.
Fortunately, Fitness Audio is here to make your job easier! Read on to find out 4 tools every Fitness Instructor needs for seamless teaching.
1. A Fitness Microphone
When it comes to teaching group fitness, having a fitness mic is a must! Not only will a fitness-rated microphone help your students hear better and follow your class more easily, but it will also save your voice so you don’t have to scream over your music to be heard.
You should get a quality fitness microphone that is durable, sweat-proof, and wireless - this will prevent your movement from being restricted by wires.
In addition, we always recommend Fitness Instructors to get a microphone case to safely store their mic and transmitters when they’re not in use.
2. A Mic Belt
Wireless mic systems are an Exercise Instructors best friend. They do, however, often involve mic transmitters that need to be kept close to the Instructor when they’re using their microphone.
Our mic belts are the perfect solution to finding somewhere to store your mic transmitter. They are worn around the waist and feature a perfectly-sized pouch designed to store your microphone transmitter.
Keeping your mic transmitter in a mic belt will keep it safe from falls and moisture, and will ensure it is kept close enough to your microphone so your audio is clear and doesn’t cut-out.
3. eGloop Electronic Sweat Protectant Paste
Exposure of electronics to sweat is one of the leading causes of fitness microphone malfunction. In order to tackle this issue, Fitness Instructors should use eGloop Electronic Sweat Protectant Paste in the connectors of their microphones and transmitters. This will prevent moisture from getting into and damaging the electronics.
4. Deoxit Connection Cleaner
Almost every Fitness Instructor is familiar with that crackling sound that can occur when mic equipment is not sufficiently and/or frequently cleaned. The best and easiest way to avoid this is to use Deoxit Connection Cleaner on your mic and transmitter connectors. Do this before using eGloop Sweat Protectant to keep your mic system in the best condition possible and your audio sounding fantastic.

The fitness industry’s rapid evolution led group classes to offer alternative options outdoors as well as online. With virtual fitness and outdoor group classes becoming widely available, the industry has captured a new fitness audience searching for an accepting community, whilst simultaneously improving their health and well-being.
Right now, many new fitness enthusiasts who began their fitness journey online are taking the next step to live classes. The best part is that they are not giving up their online programs anytime soon.
Live group classes are seeing the benefits of fitness newbies who took the online route. Still, with various options to choose from in a live class, the expectations they have to keep them coming back are similar to what they liked about their online experience.
What do the people want and what do new members expect from a group class? I have been to many group classes where I took a spot at the back or side of the room, especially if it was my first time in attendance and I felt shy. On more than one occasion, I would soon realise my choice of location was a big mistake. I was next to the dreaded dead speaker that made the latest mambo hit sound like a foghorn! Lucky me!
While the ones in the front appeared to be having the time of their lives, the unfortunate souls at the back covered their ears with a horrified look on their faces. Remembering the looks on the faces of the ten or so in that area cracks me up whenever I think about it.
I stayed for a few minutes with the hope that someone would realise what was happening, but I suppose the show must go on, and it did, so I took off.
I never returned to that group class because the risk of disappointment was too high! It was funny how something as simple as an updated sound system would have had me coming back in a heartbeat. So, with that said, let’s dive right into our top recommendations, best suited to offer the total Zumba experience. Capturing its pure essence with a customised sound system will help retain your members and reach a new customer base searching for a good time.
Let’s take a look at what you will need to host a 5-star Zumba class.
Aside from a great attitude and an in-depth knowledge of Zumba class, there are a number of things you will need to host a competitive class. This includes quality audio and lighting products.
Whether your Zumba class is in-person or online, it is of the utmost importance that you have clear and concise sound. This will make your class easy to follow and pump up its atmosphere!
If you’re hosting an in-person class, it’s also worthwhile thinking about studio lighting. Installing dynamic, colour-changing lights into your studio will boost motivation and give your gym that competitive touch.

Prolong the life of your fitness headset microphone and avoid "the crackles" by keeping both the headset connector plug and the bodypack transmitter connector jack clean and protected.
Sweat is a natural part of exercise and letting it remain in your connectors causes corrosion that will eventually lead to crackling, then connection failure. Proper storage of your headset mic and transmitter will also extend its lifespan.
TIP 1: Clean and Protect
Use DeOxit cleaner and eGloop corrosion protector on both connectors at least twice a month. Simply spray DeOxit into the connectors and gently tap out or swab out the debris it loosens.
After the connectors are clean, dab a bit of eGloop marine-grade protectant gel into the connectors. eGloop will coat the prongs and holes, making both sides of the connection as sweat resistant as possible.
TIP 2: Let your headset mic dry out between uses
Whenever your microphone is not in use, store it someplace safe with plenty of air circulation to promote drying. Having a hook near or inside your sound system rack makes hanging up to dry easy.
If you’re an individual Fitness Instructor and your headset mic travels with you, a great way to protect it and let it dry is storing it in a microphone case or a Tupperware-type container with holes punched in the lid for ventilation.
TIP 3: Don’t Do!
One of the worst ways to store your headset mic is by wrapping/winding its cable around the bodypack transmitter and putting both pieces in an unventilated drawer. Not only does this not let the headset dry as effectively as hanging or storing in a ventilated space, you’ll also decrease the life of your headset mic’s cable by winding it around the transmitter. Repeated wrapping/winding will put kinks in the cable which will eventually cause shorts in it.
If you absolutely must use a drawer: gently loop the cable, making the loops as large as possible - and be careful not to close the drawer on the cable. We’ve repaired many headset cables that have been damaged by having a drawer closed on them.
TIP 4: Back things up
Having a backup for critical equipment is one of the best ways to assure ‘the class will go on’ with little or no stress. We always recommend having a backup headset mic. A backup belt-pack transmitter is a good idea too, though most technical issues usually happen in the headset mic first. Even an inexpensive headset will do – as long as it has the proper connector type for your transmitter.
A backup headset ensures you will have a working mic – and save your voice - while your main headset is repaired or replaced.

Bootcamps are the fitness class people hate to love. They are hardcore and painful, but they get results! Because of this, there are increasingly more Bootcamps opening up around the world. This means that current Bootcamp Instructors need to start seeking ways to level-up their Bootcamps to stay competitive and hold onto their clients.
Here are Fitness Audio’s top 3 tips for running a competitive Bootcamp.
Remember: Variety is the Spice of Bootcamp
Bootcamps can get boring quickly. If you're constantly repeating classes and routines, chances are you’ll find yourself losing members.
In order to avoid this, you need to mix up your classes so they’re different each time. Simply changing the exercises you teach, intensity of your class, and music you play can make a huge difference in making your Bootcamp more enjoyable.
The Great Outdoors
Where possible, Bootcamps should be hosted outdoors. Not only does this maintain the tradition of Bootcamps and appeal to outdoor-training fans, but it does also mean you and your clients are less restricted by walls, ceilings, windows, and doors.
When it comes to selecting a good outdoor location to run your Bootcamp, you’ll need to undertake a risk assessment to ensure there are minimal hazards and threats to the health of your students. It’s also a good idea to consult your local council to make sure you are legally allowed to run your Bootcamp where you want to.
Music is Your Best Friend
It is very difficult to run a successful Bootcamp without being able to motivate your clients. You need to move around, use inflection, excitement and authority in your voice, and celebrate your students’ achievements. You should also pump fast-paced music to help motivate your students to push themselves.
It has been recommended that Fitness Instructors play high-energy popular music between 140-160 BPM. In order to get the most out of your music, you should also invest in a solid portable sound system that doesn’t compromise the audio quality of your microphone.
View our full range of outdoor stereos here.

The general rule about the wireless systems we offer is: the more expensive systems perform better and are more durable - especially for group exercise usage, where movement and sweat create a tough environment for any headset microphone system.
In heavy use situations (multiple classes per day), medium to higher priced microphone systems will give you the best performance and be a better value in the long run. If you have budget constraints, rest assured that all mic systems offered by Fitness Audio are professional quality and use an aerobics style headframe designed for fitness use.
At Fitness Audio, we offer different mics for different usage levels. Our Aeromic is designed for high usage of up to 7 classes a day, 7 days a week. Our EMic, on the other hand, is better suited for light usage of up to 3 classes a day.
We also have specific mics for specific classes. For example, our Cyclemics are designed specifically for Spin Instructors, whilst our EMics are designed for more gentle fitness classes, such as Yoga and Pilates.
